A useful answer · Conferences & presentations

Can I record an event straight from the mixing desk?

Often, but it depends on the mixer’s outputs and the recording requirement. A compatible desk may provide USB or analogue audio to a recorder or interface. The room PA mix is not automatically a balanced recording: naturally loud or unamplified sources can be missing or too quiet in that feed.

Decide what the recording is for

A record of a speech, an edited performance video and a multitrack music recording are different deliverables. State whether you need a single finished audio feed or separate sources for later mixing. Ask what the desk and recording system can actually provide.

Tell the technical team how the audio will be used with any cameras and who is responsible for the final files. Confirm permission and rights for recording and distribution with the event organiser; equipment hire alone does not resolve those issues.

Check the mix, not just the connection

The room mix reinforces what the audience needs more of. A naturally loud instrument might require little help through the PA, so a recording taken from that same balance may under-represent it. An audience question heard acoustically may not be captured at all.

Ask whether a separate recording mix or additional sources are needed. Check with headphones or the actual recording destination, rather than assuming that a good room sound proves the recorded balance. Avoid changing the audience mix purely to fix a recording without coordinating both outputs.

Make a test recording and play it back

Confirm the exact mixer model, outputs, recording device, connections and software where relevant. USB functionality varies by model; a USB socket is not evidence of the specific recording capability you need.

Record a representative test, stop and listen to the saved file. Check the intended voices, playback and instruments, not only a microphone tap. Agree file format, storage, who starts and monitors the recording, and who receives it afterwards. For an important record, discuss an appropriate backup arrangement in the brief.

Put it into practice

Before promising a recording

  • Define the finished deliverable and who will produce it.
  • Confirm the mixer and recording system support that output.
  • Listen to an actual test file containing the real sources.
