A useful answer · Lighting & effects

Can you use smoke or haze outdoors?

Atmospheric effects can be used outdoors where the equipment and event arrangements are suitable, but the result is less predictable than in a controlled indoor space. Air movement can carry the effect away from the intended area. Do not base an essential visual moment on a guaranteed cloud or beam effect without testing and a fallback.

Describe the effect, not just the machine

A brief burst for an entrance and a continuous atmosphere for visible beams have different needs. Tell the supplier where the audience is, where the light travels and where the effect is intended to sit. Share site photographs and whether the space is fully open, covered or partly enclosed.

A sheltered-looking stage can still have strong air movement across it. Conditions during setup may differ from the performance. The question is not simply whether the machine produces output outdoors, but whether that output creates the intended look in the working conditions.

Check suitability and responsibilities

Ask the supplier to confirm the equipment’s suitability for the proposed environment and how it is protected and operated. Outdoor power, cable routes and public access need appropriate planning. Do not assume a roof makes indoor equipment suitable for all outdoor conditions.

The effect also needs the site or venue’s agreement and an assessment of where it may drift. Consider nearby people, visibility and other activities as part of that process. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the event’s agreed operating arrangements.

Build a visual alternative

Work with the lighting plan so the performance remains readable and purposeful without the atmosphere. The cue might still be supported by colour, a focused area or a change in intensity if the effect cannot be used.

During the approved test, observe the effect from the audience rather than beside the machine. Agree who can decide to omit it when conditions change. Increasing output indefinitely is not a reliable substitute for a suitable plan.
