A useful answer · Stages & rigging

Can we hang lights or speakers from the venue’s bars?

Only after the proposed use has been checked against the venue’s documentation and approved by the responsible competent people. A visible bar, beam or attachment point is not enough information to authorise hanging equipment. The supporting structure, loads, attachments, access and installation all need consideration.

Ask for documentation, not a visual guess

Start with the venue technical contact. Ask which positions are permitted, what relevant loading information and records are available, and who authorises the work. Provide the proposed equipment and positions for review.

Do not assume a bar suitable for one light can accept a loudspeaker or several additional fixtures. Existing equipment also forms part of the arrangement. The appearance or diameter of a bar is not a reliable basis for a loading decision.

Include access and the working method

The installation needs a plan for reaching the positions, handling equipment and keeping unrelated people clear of the work. Ask who carries out and supervises the task, and how it fits around other contractors and venue activity.

This is not a DIY rigging checklist. Selection of supports, attachments and any secondary suspension belongs with competent people using the relevant equipment information. Do not improvise clamps, use unapproved building elements or change an agreed rig without review.

  • Venue drawings and permitted attachment positions.
  • Relevant load information and existing suspended equipment.
  • Proposed fixtures, loudspeakers or other loads.
  • Access arrangements and the person authorising installation.

Have another route if approval is unavailable

If the venue cannot provide the information or approve the proposed use, discuss an alternative with the supplier. A ground-supported arrangement may be possible, but it also requires a suitable design and space. It is not an automatic workaround to a missing structural check.

Raise the issue during planning, not when the equipment arrives. The position of lighting or speakers can affect coverage, sightlines and the room layout, so an alternative may need coordination with the wider production.

Put it into practice

Before specifying a rig

  • Identify the authorised venue contact and permitted positions.
  • Share documentation and the complete proposed equipment.
  • Agree competent installation and an alternative if approval is not possible.
